1. If Sam leaves Frodo, if he lets go of his hand and walks away, leaving Frodo
on the cold floor of the tunnel, then it makes true what Sam has been
subconciously denying: That Frodo has indeed died and laid aside the quest.
2. I think it is really Sam's practical "hobbit-sense" versus his own personal
emotions. He knows that if he stays by Frodo, or goes home then the rest
of the world will suffer because of it. Yet at the same time he can't imagine
going on without Frodo. Also, to quote Frodo himself (sort of) from FotR:
Sam knows what he *must* do, but he's afraid to do it.
3. Hmm...I think Sam decides that if he's going to leave Frodo, it won't be to
find Gollum (which would be going backwards at any rate). Maybe this is a
test. He is making an adult
choice.

In this fair land, I'll stay no more
Here labor is in vain
I'll seek the mountains far away
And leave the fertile plain
I am going to the West
You say you will not go with me
You turn your eyes away
You say you will not follow me
No matter what I say
I am going to the West
I am going to the West
I will journey to the place
That was shaped by heaven's hand
And I will build for me a bougher
Where angles footprints mark the land
I am going to the West
Wind, my blanket, earth, my bed
My canopy, a tree
Willows by the river's edge
Will whisper me to sleep
I am going to the West
You say you will not go with me
You turn your eyes away
You say you will not follow me...
No matter what I say
