The Ring does seem an active player here. Soon it actually takes control of
Frodo's muscles and moves his hand (next question, I know :-) ).
Sam lends his down-to-earth strength here, both physical and spiritual. It must
be like a touch of the old Shire for Frodo to feel Sam's arm supporting him.
Sam is, I'm sure, concentrating on Frodo, and pushing his own fear to one side.
Gollum is still showing them the way, and emphasising that they need to get out
of this place.
The greenish light suggests that Gollum is on top, though the fact that it's
green-white perhaps reminds us that Smeagol's still there. It's a visual
link, too, with the unnaturalness of Minas Morgul; a reminder that Gollum's
life has been unnaturally
prolonged.
