'Men of Gondor seldom boast and never lie...'
Boromir never lied - certainly not about his interest in the ring; he was quite
vocal about wanting to take the ring to Gondor.
And as for boasting - it's not boasting, as they say, if you've done all the
things you say! =] it's just not all that modest...
But Boromir spent months struggling with the pull of the ring and finally
succumbs for just a moment. (Aside from the fact that inevitably this would
happen to anyone influenced by the ring, not just the dishonorable) it's clear
that Boromir truly IS an honorable man because of the deep remorse he
feels at his *dishonorable* actions - explicitly in his conversation with
Aragorn but also in the sacrifice he makes for Merry and Pippin...
Just the same, the hobbits were right to be Faramir, and men of Gondor - and
just about everybody else. The ring could ensnare them all...
