...that the problem with Shakespeare is that he did not believe in the supernatural but just used it as a device in his stories.

I didn't mean to say that Tolkien disagreed with him on his choice of religion. I'm sure Tolkien enjoyed stories by Jews, Muslims, Hindus, pagans, or anyone if it was a good story.
