...wearing full body armor did it!  Or it could have been done quickly by someone with strong will like Glorfindel.  Recall that Faramir is able to withstand it better than Boromir.  So it stands to reason that very brief contact might not have hurt them.  After all, the hobbits have been able to hold onto it without immediately becoming possessed.  The Ring seems to affect each individual differently, and some are better able to handle it than others.

Elrond did very deliberately avoid contact with it, but he has a longstanding history with the Ring!  The Elven ringbearers might be more vulnerable as Galadriel's temptation and Gandalf's fear of it suggest.
