I had never thought of the idea that Gollum loosened the rope. That could
be what happened. But I always figured it was elven magic, and I still
like that idea best. The rope burned Gollum, so I don't think he would
have touched it long enough to undo Sam's knot. And if Gollum had touched
the rope before they tied it around his ankle, I think he would have begged
them not to put it on in the first place, instead of not reacting until it had
already been
tied.
