whenever possible. I imagine her looking in her mirror as Sam tugs wistfully at
the rope and says her name.
Having said that, I don't know whether it's an act on Galadriel's part or the
power woven into the rope that causes it to come to Sam's hand as he calls
Galadriel's name. But I do believe it's "magic".
Sam is very aware of Gollum. Smeagol/Gollum is like the shadow of Sam: an
untrustworthy companion contrasted with the most faithful of companions; a
creature who serves two masters contrasted with our straightforward Sam, who
was "meant to be solid and whole". Way back near the beginning of this current
cycle of Rings discussion, we had several threads pointing out how much "doggy"
imagery was used for Sam. After Smeagol joins the group, the canine imagery is
transferred to him, and is a good deal more overt, I
feel.
