I always get a little annoyed with Frodo here. After looking into
Galadriel's mirror, experiencing the sustaining power of lembas, etc., you’d
think it wouldn't be that much of a stretch for him to believe there was a
little Elvish providence in the rope. But, I think you’re right; not only
is he exhausted, he’s definitely begun to lose hope. It’s almost as if
the idea that the rope could be magical annoys *him*, or maybe it’s more that
he feels impatient that they move on, no matter how the rope came down.
I’m always thankful here too, that he didn’t phase Sam’s enthusiasm about
it. Definitely a sign of things to
come.
