enough! Even though it lay hidden at the bottom of Sam's pack, and does
not look very long, the hobbits are surprised to find it may do the
trick. As it turns out, there is ample length left over. Is this
like the loaves and fishes miracle? Does the rope lengthen as
needed? Anything is possible where Elven rope is involved!
Frodo has greater worries on his mind than Gollum. Remember, Sam does not
know what happened, or nearly happened, on Amon Hen. I am sure Frodo has
a vivid memory of Sauron's Eye nearly discovering him in that high place.
So when Sam worries about Gollum, Frodo is probably thinking that is the least
of his
worries.

"‘I think he was a silly little man,' said Councillor Tompkins. ‘Worthless, in fact; no use to Society at all.'
"‘Oh, I don't know,' said Atkins, who was nobody of importance, just a schoolmaster. ‘I am not so sure: it depends on what you mean by use .'
"‘No practical or economic use,' said Tompkins. . . .

"‘It is proving very useful indeed,' said the Second Voice. ‘As a holiday, and a refreshment. It is splendid for convalescence; and not only for that, for many it is the best introduction to the Mountains. It works wonders in some cases. I am sending more and more there. They seldom have to come back.'"
