Very convenient...Coming when it's called. Great trick-- pet rope-- kind of like a pet rock.
Also important is that after the rope gets them out of their troubles the Moon
comes out and provides a light and the clouds lift-- a sign of hope-- a turn for the better. which makes what happens next all the more interesting. I love the comparison Tolkien makes between the rope and Gollum.
Sam's comment about Gollum of "Ssss!" and referring to him in terms of "snakes and addlers" paints an interesting juxtaposition to the rope. The rope helps them through the rocks just as Gollum becomes their guide and helps them through the rocks. The rope comes down itself when Sam called and Gollum comes down to the hobbits when Sam and Frodo were ready and waiting for him.

Hither are you gone from me
To this longing-- to this strain.
Neither are we far from free
From this aching-- from this pain.
Burden lost or lest sustain
All our misery--delay.
Drink in deeply to detain
What we can not quench today.
