that Sam is the one who brings up Gollum. Earlier it was Frodo who fretted
about Gollum tailing the Company, but now Frodo is too absorbed in his personal
struggle. Later Sam will become preoccupied with Gollum out of jealousy, but
now I think he still perceives Gollum as a simple threat.
As to Frodo's need for rest and progress, I think Frodo would be content to
rest if he had made any progress. It is rest after a day of walking in circles
that he finds
intolerable.
