Ok, apologies for being a little late here. Yesterday I had some demands
that kept me away from the discussion, and today I've just returned from work
and I'm screwing my head on properly ;-)
I title this: "Reminder of the Threat"
The further into Emyn Muil Sam and Frodo get the more reminders they face of
the dangers that await them. Yet none is more powerful, I feel, than a
piercing shriek that turns the blood cold and stops the heartbeat: the cry of a
Ringwraith. For me, as a "fly on the wall" watching this adventure, I
fell especially reminded of the true threat that overshadows the hobbits, and
like them, I feel my blood run cold. The sudden fear evoked by the shriek
causes Sam to fall prostrate and Frodo to slide down the embankment and into
darkness.
I think this darkness or blindness is not only physical, but also symbolic, but
of what I'm not entirely sure, myself. I'm open to interpretations.
As Frodo tries to regain his composure from his fall he can't find a hold, he
can't see a thing, and he can't move. All is black for him. This is
a very frightening idea for me as I read; I feel an intense sense of fear at
the idea of such a sudden paralysis.
The only hope is rope; and Sam proves his usefulness and foresight by breaking
out a coil of rope. Perhaps this part could be titled "Sam Saves the
Day". Perhaps.
As Sam lowers rope to Frodo suddenly Frodo feels the darkness lifting, or his
blindness leaving... or a little of both; could this be the result of the
Lorien elves' power woven somehow into the
rope?
