I don't recall when I first read LOTR but I am pretty sure that I did not
expect Theoden to go along with Saruman. I guess because of all that had
happened to him and his people up to this point and knowing that Saruman was to
blame would make him wary. I think it was his chance to show that he was strong
enough not to be overpowered by his voice. I love the fact that just a
voice can put a spell on people and be such a powerful influence.
About #4, Saruman is just showing that he is trapped and desperate.
Gandalf can see that clearly and I love the part where he just laughs at
him. Great
