It seems that Morgoth had sent so much of his power out into the earth that
when he was lifted from his throne the foundations of Beleriand cracked.
Over the next several years, in a series of earthquakes, it gradually sank
beneath the waves - except for one granite monolith which had put a kink into
the gorge of the Teiglin. This was the stone of the hapless; Morwen
Elfsheen was buried beside it, and it bore the memorial inscriptions of Turin
and Niniel. Incidentally, one of the Silmarils was lost into chasm that
opened during the
earthquakes.
