is the hellebore. It's an evergreen, and the flowers of my "Lenten Rose" Hellebores usually open fully by Ash Wednesday. They are the earliest of the winter-blooming plants, and will bloom in spite of snow, frost, and ice. The flowers eventually fade somwhat, but last through the rest of the year.
