Is the guard really as hostile as he sounds, or is he just doing his job?
The poor guy doesn't really know his job. Doesn't he sound confused and
frustrated? First Gandalf is a friend, then he isn't, then there are the
conflicting rumors of Saruman--is he friend or foe? Theodred is only recently
dead. And Eomer comes back, now the Kings heir, presumably, and is put in jail.
Orders are coming from Grima, the King is a shadow of himself, orcs are
multiplying in the land, and nobody seems to be doing anything about it except
to hole up in Edoras and wait. This sounds like one stressed out guard. Who
does he obey? And why did these three strangers have to come by on his watch?
Too many conflicts going on in his head to expect him to give a calm,
considered
answer.
