I was curious if translators would just use a more common word for "ghost" or
"specter" instead of a more uncommon word like "wraith." I think it's on
the EE FOTR dvd that Tom Shippey goes into some of the "wreath" and "writhe"
etymological history in the word: a "wraith" connotes a specter, but that
word also connotes the writhing torment the ring causes and the ring-like shape
of a
wreath.
