but since there were no real seats of higher learning, there were probably no doctors as we know them today.  (Any gathered manucripts were kept by the kings or stewards.  Ex. Denethor and the manuscripts kept at Minas Tirith)  There were probably herb masters (or more likely mistresses *see my screen name*) that passed on wisdom of previous generations.  Elrond was known (I think) for his prowess in healing partly because of being an powerful Elf King, but also because of his knowledge of herbs.

In the shire I'm guessing they had  herbalists and  midwives.
