Fastred is a hobbit, since I've never seen anything to suggest the contrary.
He's a pretty smart Hobbit, to marry Elanor, daughter of the Mayor, beautiful,
certainly rich, with huge tracts of land...
He's yet another male from Tolkien's world marrying in some way "above his
station" (Aragorn, Faramir, Bungo Baggins, Beren, Celeborn, the list literally
goes on and on). The males in Tolkien's world may marry only for love on the
surface of things, but there is always handily some great profit to be had for
them from the marriage, I
note.

'My heart's right down in my toes, Mr. Pippin,' said Sam. 'But we aren't eaten yet, and there are some stout folk here with us. Whatever may be in store for old Gandalf, I'll wager it isn't a wolf's belly.'
