They like building big, as others have said. And they don't mind either- that's
always on their mind. Gimli, at the Hornburg thinks that if he had a hundred
Dwarves and one year, he could fix the fortress and turn it into 'a place where
armies will break upon like water'. Legolas calls him strange, since one would
think (like Legolas) that wishing for an army would be approriate. Gimli does
do that later, but what timing...AFTER the battle of Helm's Deep!
And in Aglarond we can see Gimli's anxiousness regarding the caves.
Legolas: "Do not send for more of your folk! A family of Dwarves might mar more
than they might achieve!"
Gimli: "Do you cut down glades of blossoming trees in the spring for firewood?
Nay, we would not quarry the rock. A tender chip, in a whole anxious day,
perhaps."
Not exactly the quote, but can get Dwarves' feelings for stone. If Men did out
out of pride and awe inspiring, Dwarves just...do it.
Read Gloin's account of Erebor- still brings a tear to my
eye.
There is but one task remaining in Arda-we,the Dragons of Valinor will make it happen.
