First I agree with your point about impressive spaces but your comment about pillars made me think of something I had seen awhile ago.  I was trying to find a picture of the inside of a salt mine --I recalled seeing one several years ago when the local salt mine collapsed; it  showed a huge hall of pillars underground. Instead  I stumbled across this one in Poland.  Wowsers -- not exactly pillared halls but fantastic rooms carved out of the salt.  A real life Moria !  All this stuff is carved out of rock salt.  If the pics don't work ( and even if they do these sites are interesting) go to
