Tolkien said that Sam was least affected by the Ring. Frodo, who had been bearing it for a longer period, steadily gave in to its power. It was just as he was going to throw it into Mount Doom that he gave up wholly.

Did this mean that Frodo had not 'passed the test,' because if the choice was his, he wouldn't have thrown the Ring into the fire and so ended up like Gollum. But he was not so obssessed with it like Gollum, and awoke as if from a trance after it was destroyed. Why was this?
