Happy New Year One and All! And may the coming year, against all odds, be one
of peace for the world.
Now the random thought: Isn’t it odd how JRRT gives away the fate of
practically everybody in the Prologue to LotR, especially in the Note on Shire
Records. Not only Frodo (who brought Bilbo’s diary back to the Shire from
Rivendell) and Sam (whose children’s descendents kept copies of the Red Book)
and Meriodoc and Peregrin (who founded great families that kept various
records), but also Aragorn, Elrond and Galadriel, and even Boromir, whose
demise is implied in the reference to Steward Faramir. I wonder if anyone ever
notices that on the first read? Actually, I wonder if I even read the Prologue
the first time through—it was way back in the mid-20th century so I can’t
remember.
