I suppose that I should mention that in the early years of
the last century 'lover' did not necessarily mean 'sex partner' and 'make love'
most commonly meant respectable courting behavior (there is a 'Thimble Theater'
cartoon in which Olive Oyl discovers that Popeye's father, who looks identical
to him, has been trying to kiss her while pretending to be Popeye. She
says 'Oh, how many times has he made love to me in the past?' This was
considered a proper breakfast table amusment in the
1920's).
