and how much the 'fantasy' genre? I haven't read much else like it, but
take the Chronicles of Narnia. Is there sex there? There was
a little society Tolkien enjoyed with CS Lewis and others. I don't know
much about their collective writings, but I've always assumed they used a
similar style. These stories were necessarily male dominated and about
accomplishing missions (resolving power issues). The pacing was an
important component of the story and couldn't be bogged down with the slow
moving intricacies of romance.
Is that part of it?
Personally, I think LOTR doesn't have much room for romance...it's a great
story as is, but a challenge at 1200+ pages. And the Sil, as I've said
before, is one of the most sensual books I've read in awhile. It's very
sexy. Tolkien did have a great ability to understand what women want even
if he didn't write from their
viewpoint.
