1. I thought that Frodo was concerned for Bilbo and his eagerness to see The
Ring. However, I am open to the possibility that he was thinking, "It's
mine, back off!" After all, he did feel the desire to strike Bilbo so
maybe The Ring is already claiming Frodo.
2. I thought that the change in Bilbo's appearance would be visible to
anyone who was looking at his face, not just Frodo. But either way, it
freaks the heck out of me. Here is one of the nicest, most innocent good
guys in the story, in the heart of the one of the safest, coziest, most
beautiful places in ME, and he just turned into Gollum for a second. The
Ring is so evil and powerful, it is scary.
3. I thought Bilbo was wiping away the memory of owning The Ring.
Of course, he could never really forget it, but it was like he was telling his
mind, "It's over, let it go." Like he was brushing away his attachment to
The Ring. Whatever the purpose of passing his hand across his eyes, it
worked perfectly in the story. I cannot explain how it enriches the story
for me, just like I cannot explain how or why I enjoy The Trilogy itself.
It just does and I just
do.
