I doubt Tolkien would ever have written LOTR...

... if he hadn't been almost pushed into it by Unwin's refusal to take the Sil, and his request for "more hobbits"  Tolkien would be known to the public chiefly as the author of a very good children's book, while the (probably much longer)  Sil would be known only to a small handful of devotees and possibly a few academics.
