I said that my opinion was "old", I mostly meant that it antedated my reading
of The Treason of Isengard (which was just a few months ago). I take that
passage so seriously because Tolkien was writing an outline to do exactly what
I thought he had done anyway. That was all.
But, as you say, I think we may just need to agree to
disagree on this one. Since, however, I detected a somewhat put-out note
in your post, I wanted to apologise if I'd rubbed you the wrong way in one my
