In the chapter Over Hill and Under Hill:
"When he [Bilbo] peeped out in the lightening-flashes, he saw that across the
valley the stone-giants were out and were hurling rocks at one another for a
game, and catching them, and tossing them down into the darkness where they
smashed among the trees far below, or splintered into little bits with a
bang.... 'This won't do at all!' said Thorin. 'If we don't get blown off
or drowned, or struck by lightning, we shall be picked up by some giant and
keicked sky-high for a football.' 'Well, if you know of anywhere better,
take us there!' said Gandalf, who was feeling very grumpy, and was far from
being happy abou the giants himself."
And yes, the goblins did take Bilbo and co north of Moria, but Tolkien does
mention something about goblins making extentions on other passages, and I was
wondering if maybe, perhaps, it could have been an extention of Moria.
Thank you to everybody so
far!!!
"We hear about those as just went on - and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end.
