You will note, of course, that The Hobbit is a totally different sort of book
that LOTR or the Sil. Tolkien basically wrote The Hobbit for his children - and
published it for children. It wasn't meant to be part of the Middle-Earth
"canon," so to speak. But, as he said, more serious things "crept in" and by
the time he wrote LOTR, the concept of a sequel to The Hobbit had changed, and
LOTR became more an extention of the Sil. Everything became much more serious,
including the Elves.
