have consequences, like NZ Strider said. When I first read this I was
reminded of the riddle game between Bilbo and Gollum. There's a passage
about the ancient rules of the riddle game and the awful consequences of
breaking them - even Gollum didn't dare do that.
The message is consistent - there's nothing forcing adherence to oaths and
promises, just each person's integrity, even in the most corrupt
creatures.
