...until I discovered that almost everything in The Silmarillion happened in
the span of only about 500 years (as Reverend noted). As much as it seems
that the Elves procrastinated in taking action against Morgoth, it took much,
much longer for them and the other peoples of Middle-earth to deal with Sauron.
I think part of the perception may also come from the fact that the historians
(i.e., Tolkien) had more information about the Third Age, and presented its
events in more detail, thus making it seem that much more was happening when
really it is just that more was being
presented.
