I was thinking about this whole issue of flesh and the Valar.
In the Silmarillion it seems that Morgoth clads himself in flesh because of
his own ignorance arrogance, you name it. (the point is that he does it)
Here is the thing I find odd right now:
If the Valar only clad themselves with a visual form in their minds,(stated
in the Silmarillion), why do they need weapons and armour when fighting? If
the Valar is clad in visual form only, and they have spiritual powers, why
should they have armour to protect themselves against steel? Surely the
spirit cannot be harmed by material things.
The same question can be used about the steel(mithril maybe) weapons used by
the Valar save for Tulkas in the wars. Wouldn't weapons be less effective
against orcs and whatever Morgoth had, compared to the full force of the
Valars spiritual powers? It does say that Eönwë was the master vielder of
weapons in all of Arda.
Does this mean that the Valar clad themselves in flesh and used weapons
against their foes, or is this whole issue simply a earlier draft of Tolkiens
work that was later changed?
But of course, I'm sure there is a third suggestion outthere...care to share it
with me?
