Consider Denethor: he didn't have any more children after Faramir and may have
considered his 'second jewel' had 'completed' his family. (Although this
relies on his having been aware that he wasn't going to have more children.)
Then consider Denethor's disillusion towards his second son in later
life. There he has Boromir, the very son he ever wanted, and next to the
pride of his life is a son who doesn't measure up to his standards - and yet is
called 'complete jewel'. The name is like a bitter irony to Denethor, and
only serves to deepen his disenchantment with his younger son.
All complete and utter fabrication on my part, of
course.
