Doesn't the carving on the gates of Moria contain the actual name "Moria"?
I remember thinking that was a bit strange, since the name means "Black Pit"
and was really only given to Moria by the elves after it had fallen to the
forces of evil...
Calling Sauron the dark lord's true name is also perhaps parallel to Morgoth
who "lost" the right to his original name Melkor after the destruction of the
trees. He didn't exactly approve of being called "Black Fiend" either, and kept
calling himself
Melkor.
