The other night I was looking up words in the dictionary that began with words
(or names) from LOTR. I came across "peregrinate" which means to journey on
foot. I was speculating, perhaps this was one of Tolkien's more subtle attempts
at humor? And if he got "flet" from "fletcher"-maker of arrows? Just thought
this was very interesting, and if anyone else had similar
finds.

Merry Rules!
Merry and Pippin are digging a ditch on a very hot day. Pippin said to Merry.
"Why are we down in this hole digging a ditch when Gandalf is standing up there under the shade of a tree?"Merry answered
"I don't know,why don't you ask him?"
So Pippin climbed out of the hole and went to his boss."Why are we digging in the hot sun and you are standing in the shade?""Intelligence." Gandalf said.
"Intelligence, what's that?" Gandalf answered,"Well, I'll show you. I'll put my hand on this tree and I want you to hit it with your fist as hard as you can." Pippin took a mighty swing and tried to hit Gandalf's hand. Gandalf removed his hand and the ditch digger hit the tree. Gandalf said,"That's intelligence!"
Pippin went back to his hole. Merry asked,"Weell, what did he say?"
"He said we were down here because of intelligence." "What's intelligence?"said Merry. Seeing no tree, Pippin put his hand on his face and said,
"Take your shovel and hit my hand."
"You're supposed to put it in the ground!"
"It is in the ground!"
"Outside!"
"It was your idea!"
