Has anyone read how Christopher Tolkien felt about all the editing he did for
his father? I believe he edited at least The Sil, and wrote/compiled Unfinished
Tales, and probably some others. Was this a request by JRR-I thought I read it
was, or did Christopher take this up voluntarily? And did Christopher feel he
was obligated to fulfill his father's wishes, yet wouldn't really have
volunteered to do so on his own? I ask this becauase as I reread these books I
get the feeling from his tone that he was greatly burdened by this
responsibility once he realized the state of his father's notes. I sense
some annoyance, frustration, and disapproval towards JRR's level of
organization; I also feel almost a condescending attitude from Christopher as a
result. I also read where Christopher mentions how many times his father
criticized the maps he copied from his father-yet Christopher felt they were
clearly better than his father's.
Anyway, I'm just very curious about this, and wonder if anyone knows the real
story.
"...and that first hour in which he shone, the white glimmer of a silver dawn..." "And the bright stars shone as silver fires." "...as a white cloud exceeding swift beneath the moon, as a star...a pale flame on the wings of a storm."
"Red as blood shone their swords."
