have always linked Eomer and Faramir together, and always felt Faramir, of
course, to be the more educated, aware, less impulsive, and sensible of the
two. However, I never thought to analyze and compare these two
interrogations-though I also have always thought them both to be
interrogations. A couple other things that always have stood out to me about
both Aragorn and Frodo yet rarely brought up, are their great abilities in
dipolmacy. Both Frodo and Aragorn are often in situations where they must
represent the group-Frodo in Lorien, as he is brought up w/Legolas to speak
w/Haldir, and Aragorn to speak w/Galadriel for instance. And, as you brought
up, while both Aragorn and Frodo's situation in these two instances started off
on a bad note as they were looked on suspiciously and should have been brought
before each lands' kings, both Frodo and Aragorn turned each situation around
completely to their benefit-gaining both incredible trust, a degree of
allegiance, admiration, and horses/provisions/care verses what could've been.
This unique skill and ability of diplomacy which I use in lack of a better
word, is I feel a skill that has helped Frodo and Aragorn much more than is
brought up, throughout LOTR-as both are often at the mercy of many a suspicious
character, who often tests them. How much more difficult, and possible, would
their journies have been, if Gildor, Haldir (Legolas helped, but still insisted
on meeting Frodo before the others) Eomer, and Faramir, had not trusted them?
Frodo, much less wordly and travelled than Aragorn, still manages to impress
many people he encounters-Gildor, Goldbrry, and Tom, Gimli's father Gloin
(name?), Galadriel, Glorfindel, (5 G's!) Haldir, Faramir, & even Saruman
eventually. He continues to speak for the hobbits even during the Shire
Scouring. I feel this was one aspect, though less dramatic, of both
personalities was an important key to their successes. For those of us in the
workforce, we know how difficult it is to earnn people's trust if we start off
on a bad foot, or crossing other's territory. Also, all we have to do is think
of the real world diplomacy and dealing with other countries' cultural
differences and baggage, and we can look on the skill and ability of Frodo and
Aragorn with a whole new
light.
