We come to it at last, one of the very final shots of the films. Here you
go:
Questions:
1. How did you feel about that door closing when you first saw the
film? In subsequent viewings?
2. Here are some thoughts about "endings" from amagpie, excerpted from a
response from her to the Grey Havens SCOD discussion. I particularly
liked what she said here, and think it deserves a reprise. What do the
rest of you think of her comments below?
"...And then the door shuts in our face and we're told, I believe, "Go Home.
It's over. You can not always be torn in two. You have a life to live."
And at that moment I forgive them all for every nitpicky thing I ever thought
about the movie and every stupid line of dialog they ever wrote and I want the
experience that was these movies... the experience of anticipation and
excitement and discussion... to start over again."
3. What if the film had ended with a shot of Sam and his family, rather
than this door closing? Would you have prefered that image at the end
instead of that door being closed in your face?
4. Do you feel a sense of "closure" at the end of the films? What
contributes to that sense for you, or if not, what is missing?
5. Other comments or observations on this final scene?
I'll post one more screencap on Friday, from the closing credits, and that
will be the end of the SCOD series for ROTK. Then, we need to talk about what
comes next. Look for a post on that next week!
Thanks,
everyone!
