at one point, elijah said that if he were to make the silmarillion, he'd make
it as a faux documentary tv series, kinda like ken burns's stuff.
Covering the events of the sil as if they were real history, with explanations
and maps and photo montages with voice-overs and dramatizations and
talking-head interviews from real and made-up experts on middle-earth, who
discuss not only all the aspects but also talk about how that history has
influenced the present-day world.
i think that would be an amazingly grand idea that would hit just the right
tone for me. it would not only put across the events and let us see them
played out (in the dramatic parts), but it would also impart that sense of
"real history" and a little of what it might be like if it were
history.
