*War in The North Toasts The Professor*
I blame Canada Post for my missing out on The Toast festivities a few weeks
back on January 3rd. You see the folks behind the forthcoming War in the
North videogame planned an event to celebrate The Professor’s birthday in
unison with geeks all across the land, on January 3rd we were to raise our
collective glasses and cheer before preparing to go off to war!

*Hunt on for Hobbit filming locations*
Fiordland residents have spotted director Peter Jackson, along with five
helicopters, as he hunts for filming spots for The Hobbit movies. Yesterday,
Jackson’s spokesman, Matt Dravitzki, confirmed Jackson was location scouting
in the Queenstown area before filming starts next month. He would be there
for a “few days” and crews were also looking for sites in the North Island.
Dravitzki said he was unprepared to offer further details until filming
started. Jackson is adapting JRR Tolkien’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings
trilogy into two movies. His private jet, a Gulfstream, was seen at
Queenstown Airport on Monday.

*Sean Astin & Dom Monaghan Not in The Hobbit…At Least Not As Sam and Merry*
Theodred posted this over on our message boards and I thought it was post
worthy: Access Hollywood video-interviewed Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan
about their involvement in The Hobbit (among other stuff), and both said
they’re probably not in The Hobbit.

*Of Saoirse Ronan… and Itaril*
Ever since a “casting call” for The Hobbit found its way on to the internet
back in January 2010, fans have been wondering much concerning the role of
the Elf-maiden (or alternately, Elf warrior-wench!) who’ll supposedly go by
the name of Itaril and fall in love with with a young Elf-lord. It wasn’t
long before fans began speculating the casting for the role and,
subsequently, Saoirse Ronan got linked to it. But much fun as the
speculation was (and is), neither the rumoured role nor the rumoured casting
choice have gone down well with many fans. And whether or not the rumours
had a ring of truth to them was anyone’s guess.

*Feel the Love: Hobbit may have date with Valentine*
Shooting of Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films will begin in Wellington next
month and a possible start date is one that fans would love – St Valentine’s
Day. Wellywood insiders have told The Dominion Post February 14 is when
cameras will start rolling on the two films. However, Sir Ian McKellen – who
is reprising his Lord of the Rings role as Gandalf – said via his website:
“I am happy to say I start filming in Wellington on February 21, 2011.” Film
publicist Melissa Booth confirmed filming would start next month but said
the exact date had yet to be set. The films’ stars would soon be arriving in
Wellington to launch the production. “It will be for a significant number of
the actors. I don’t have a date yet, but I am hoping it will be in a couple
of weeks’ time.”

*Legolas Statue Pre-Orders at Sideshow*
Continuing the new The Lord of the Rings statue line-up, Sideshow
Collectibles placed the Legolas Statue on sale last Thursday. Unfortunately
the exclusive edition sold out in a few hours, but the regular edition is
still available for pre-order. In what looks to be one of the best sculpts
of Orlando Bloom, this statue features Legolas as he’s about to pull an
arrow from his quiver. For a complete gallery and ordering details, jump on
over to SideshowCollectibles.com. Legolas is the third ‘new’ LOTR statue in
the series, joining Gandalf the Grey (Exclusive Version is Available for
Pre-Order) and Aragorn as Strider.

*LOTR Extended Blu-ray coming in 2011*
Our sources are telling us that the always reliable (and great) film-on-disc
website www.digitalbits.com is correct its Lord of The Rings Blu-ray news.
Bill Hunt released the info in his column today. We had not heard a final
decision had been reached but Hunt knows his stuff and can be trusted. This
is both good and bad. The good: Expect the extended-edition version of all
three LOTR films in 2011. Warner will attempt to do these in (obviously)
extremely high quality transfers that will fix minor items here and there
and still likely put one movie on two discs rather than cram data to one
disc and let quality suffer.

*Peeder Jigson’s Video Diary Pt 2*
Peeder Jigson is back with part 2 of his Hobbit production diary. Peeder
gives us a fairly detailed explanation of forced perspective, watch it
repeatedly because I’m not too sure he explains the concept enough. Strong
Language Warning.

*Replay: The Hobbit Stays Where it Belongs*
We posted this video back in November, but it certainly deserves a replay.
Our friends at TreeTopMedia have produced a stunning video showcasing New
Zealand’s amazing landscapes. This was initially done to impress upon the
world how important it was for The Hobbit to remain in New Zealand. However
during the middle of the shoot the good word came down that The Hobbit was
indeed staying in NZ, so the video morphed into a loving tribute to New
Zealand. Take a look, and keep an eye out on more exclusive content from
TreeTopMedia and TheOneRing.net in New Zealand!

*TORN Podcasts Now Added to TORN TV Channel*
Cliff ‘Quickbeam’ Broadway and Justin Sewell from Slave Boy Films have
produced a series of great podcasts for TheOneRing.net over the years. We
have finally gotten around to gathering them all together in our newly
opened ‘TORN TV’ channel on YouTube, take a look!
