Big news regarding the Tolkien/New Line legalities
Voronwë_the_Faithful, our resident message board legal brain, posted today
about some developments in the lawsuit between the Tolkien Estate and New
Line. Keep in mind this is simply one person’s opinions but they are an
interesting read by somebody who understands the law and can explain it
simply. It starts, “New Line has now filed a motion for summary adjudication
of the plaintiff’s cause of action seeking the right to terminate New Line’s
future rights to make the Hobbit films (or other Tolkien films). In other
words, they are asking to have that claim be dismissed entirely.”

‘Lord of the Rings’ lawsuit: Judge sends case to jury
On Tuesday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge decided that a lawsuit filed
by J.R.R. Tolkien’s heirs against New Line Cinema should be brought before a
jury. In the suit, filed in February 2008, The Tolkien Trust claims New Line
owes them at least $220 million of the profits collected from Peter
Jackson’s film trilogy (a 1969 contract promises the author’s heirs 7.5
percent of gross receipts from films and other related products).

TV Watch: Guillermo del Toro on Ferguson Video
Michelf writes: On Monday night, Guillermo del Toro was on Craig Ferguson’s
late night talk show to promote his vampire book, “The Strain.” Shortly
after sitting down, GDT remarked on Ferguson’s coffee cup, shaped like a
coiled snake. Craig said that since GDT was working on “The Hobbit”, maybe
he should put a big snake in with all the other creatures. GDT said, “Well,
there IS a “worm”. Craig said, “Oh, yeah, Smaug the Dragon”, and held the
cup in front of his face, pretending to talk like Smaug–”Bilbo Baggins,
You’d better be careful
!” GDT asked if he could borrow the cup for about
three years.

It’s about ‘Time’ - GDT gives TORn prominent props
The June 1st issue of Time, our friend and director of “The Hobbit,”
Guillermo del Toro, talks about TheOneRing.net. In the magazine’s regular
feature “Short List,” (page 63) where the movers and shakers of the world
talk about what folks do in their spare time, he says, “TheOneRing.net is a
great community where intelligent, articulate dissenters argue about
fascinating minutiae–and not just about fantasy.”

which will be making an appearance at E3 next month. Revealed as part of a
larger email discussing all the ‘first look’ games to be shown at E3, the
platforms for the new Lord Of The Rings game were not revealed, but the
title is described as “the first Lord of the Rings video game created
specifically for kids and their families.”

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
