Dominic Monaghan Talks 'THE HOBBIT'
Dominic Monaghan while promoting the next portion of this season of ABC’s
hit series LOST, stopped to comment to iF on the state of affairs with THE
HOBBIT movie (prequel to the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) which is locked in a
battle between New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson. When asked point
blank what he thought of the bitter war over the rights to the Tolkien
story, the actor very wisely stated, “ This is a very iffy subject that you
have to be careful with professionally as an actor because I’ve worked with
New Line Cinema and I’ve worked with Pete Jackson and I have good
relationships with both of them. My personal feeling as a fan is I think it’
s a real shame that New Line and Pete Jackson don’t seem to be able to work
out what’s going to happen with THE HOBBIT. I think fans of that franchise
would like to see New Line Studios attached with Pete Jackson directing."

Newton Howard Hops on 'The Waterhorse'
Director Jay Russel has posted a new blog on his MySpace website. He has
some very exciting news! "Just a brief note to tell you how excited I am
that I just signed James Newton Howard on to compose the score for "The
Waterhorse." I loved his scores for "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs." I thought
both pieces had a wonderful combination of tension and mysticism. Not the
easiest musical feat to accomplish."

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
