Guinness lists record-breaking feats in the movies
Guinness has adjudged the Most Expensive Movie Ever Made to be the 2005
“King Kong” -- at $207 million, compared to $200 million each for “Titanic”
(1997) and “Spider-Man 2.” Highest salary ever paid to a film director prior
to production: The $20 million Peter Jackson earned for megging “The Lord of
the Rings.” Most Oscars for a movie: “Ben-Hur” won 11 in 1959, and its
record was matched by “Titanic” in 1997. More recently, it became a
three-way tie when “The Return of the of the King” won all 11 of its
nominations.

Studio backers quit Jackson's Halo project
Universal and Fox have pulled out of co-financing the film after
disagreements over Jackson and Walsh's profit shares, according to PJ's

Wood Confirmed for ORC 2007
Elijah Wood has been confirmed as a guest for ORC 2007, our annual LOTR

to meet Miranda Otto (doh!!!). ORC 2005 was a blast with Sean Astin, Elijah
Wood, Dominic Monaghan, John Rhys-Davies and more! More news as we confirm
guests, ORC 2007 will take place Fri., Sat. & Sun. March 9-11, 2007 at the

A tough 'Hobbit' to start
>From Variety: MGM's recent announcement that it intended to release "The
Hobbit" and, hopefully, get Peter Jackson to direct it, caused major buzz in
Hollywood. It also caused a frenzy among Jackson fans, who have been
lobbying via petition on the fansite TheOneRing.net for Jackson to tackle
the "Lord of the Rings" prequel ASAP. The petition tallied nearly 50,000
signatures and was submitted to MGM and New Line, which share film rights to
"The Hobbit." (MGM owns distribution rights; New Line owns the rights to
actually make the movie.)

Tolkien bog to get major makeover
>From BBC.co.uk: Birmingham's historic Moseley Bog, said to have inspired JRR
Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, is to get a major revamp. The area's
Wildlife Trust will use up to £500,000 of lottery grants to transform the
wetlands, adding new car parking, footpaths and public art. The news has
been welcomed by fans of Tolkien.

TOPPS LOTR Cards Details
Comic fans whose fandom crosses over with Lord of the Rings will have
something to look out for later this month, when Topps’ The Lord of the
Rings Masterpieces trading card set...The sketch cards are that – cards upon
which the named artists drew images of LotR characters, scenes and events.
There’s no reproduction - the cards in the packs are the cards the artists
drew on. Each sketch card is a one of a kind piece of art. With the number
of artists, the total sketch card count comes to roughly 25,000 cards – the
number of cards done by any one artist carried due to their schedules,
ranging from 50 at the low end all the way up to one artist who produced
2,500. The cards are inserted randomly in boxes of the Hobby Market version
of the cards (not mass market retail).

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
