TORN Staffer Greg 'Balin' Passes

With sadness TheOneRing.net announces the passing of staff member, friend
and Tolkien fan 'Balin'. He was a fixture on the TORn chat room (Barliman's)
where he made many virtual friends that became close personal friends from
around the globe.

Balin moderated Barliman's with wit and humor and his good nature and
knowledge on a wide range of topics that will be missed. He also was
instrumental for TORn in establishing the scholarly track at the ORC and ELF
events and helped to bridge the gap between scholars and Lord of the Ring
movie fans.

Most of all Balin will be missed by friends and family for the wise,
humourous and thoughtful person that he was. Private services will be held
for his family.

The team behind the stage version of Lord Of The Rings have been slogging

Middle Earth. More than four years in the making and at a cost of $25m
(£14.3m), it has become the world's most expensive theatre show to date. And
its global future as an enterprise hangs on its opening night in Toronto,
Canada, on Thursday.

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
