NEWS FLASH! Pre-Orders For Award-Winning Documentary RINGERS!

The wait is finally over for a worldwide audience eager to see the
groundbreaking documentary RINGERS: LORD OF THE FANS, narrated by Dominic
Monaghan and released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment -- Pre-orders for
both DVD and PSP format start on Amazon.com next Monday for U.S. and Canada
(so be here for a special TORn announcement on Sept. 12th!). A film that has
become a growing sensation since January, RINGERS tells the story of 50
years of Tolkien’s influence on popular culture. Audiences found the next
“LOTR” film they’ve been craving as RINGERS blew the roof off the Slamdance
Film Festival, going on to win Outstanding Achievement Feature Documentary
at the Newport Beach Film Festival and then getting snapped up for worldwide
distribution by Sony (to be released in late November 2005)!

Ringers: Lord of the Fans at Dragon*Con
Ringer Celebriel attended the Dragon*Con Sunday panel on "Ringers: Lord of
the Fans" with filmmakers Cliff Broadway and Jeff Marchelletta. This, the
last of their three panels at Dragon*Con, focused directly on the
development and forthcoming release of the film. Cliff mentioned that, while
"Ringers" is being released on DVD, it is possible there will be theatrical
screenings in key markets, which will generate interest in the film (and
provide opportunity for line parties and other Ringer events!). The panel
opened with a rousing performance by Emerald Rose, whose music is featured
on the soundtrack. (There may be a film soundtrack album in the future as
well.)

More Dragon*Con Images
Celebriel writes: The Saturday morning parade through the streets of
downtown Atlanta, now in its fourth year, is a popular event among all
convention attendees, drawing a large contingent of Ringers as well as fans
of Star Wars, Star Trek, pirates, and many other book, film, and game
franchises. Several thousand other Dragon*Con attendees and Atlanta locals
fill the streets, cheering and photographing each contingent.

Green Books September Update: Turgon's Bookshelf
Turgon writes: I'm getting back into the swing of things after a long
summer, and here present not one but two new columns for Green Books. These
discuss recent work with Tolkien scholars Verlyn Flieger and Anne Petty,
covering new scholarship, new Tolkien, and new fiction by each writer!

MrCere's Dragon*Con 2005 Report
Mrcere writes: DragonCon in Atlanta is all of these and so much more. As one
of the largest and most important genre conventions in the world, DragonCon
is a red-letter event on any sci-fi or fantasy fan's calendar and if it
isn't, it should be.

John Noble Conversation at Dragon*Con!
Ringer Celebriel attended John Noble’s Saturday presentation at Dragon*Con.
Many fans don’t know John as well as other principals in the film, and some
may think he’s as fearsome as his character Denethor. Nothing could be
further from the truth. John is engaging and personable, and both
knowledgeable and highly articulate about his craft. He’s also well
organized, starting out by giving answers to FAQs and getting them out of
the way.

Interview: Richard Taylor
>From IGN: Richard Taylor has been working with Peter Jackson since the
beginning. From Meet the Feebles to Braindead, Heavenly Creatures and
Frighteners, the two formed a successful working relationship that would
carry them through a success beyond their wildest imagination. Some were
shocked when Peter Jackson was announced as director of the Lord of the
Rings trilogy. Three films, an Oscar, and some two billion plus worldwide
gross, it all looks like the perfect choice. The success of the Rings
trilogy also put Richard Taylor's WETA effects house on the map. As the
group continues to work on Jackson's efforts, including the upcoming King
Kong, Taylor and Co. have also been able to branch out to other projects,
including another series based on classic works of literature, the
Chronicles of Narnia. The first film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
releases on December 9th. WETA has been hard at work on the project for
years now and the results coming together are looking quite impressive.

Dragon*Con: Catching up with Bruce Hopkins
Hopkins and Jincey at DragonCon 2005 Ringer Celebriel talked with Bruce
Hopkins at Dragon*Con about his new projects. In February 2005 Bruce formed
indiPact Films, an independent film production company based in Auckland,
with partner Amarbir Singh. They aim to produce films with private
investment and help further expand the country’s film making base. Their
plans also include TV series, commercials, and music videos. Mr. Singh comes
from Bombay, India but has lived in New Zealand for eight years.

White Tree Fund Appeals for Donations for Disaster Victims
Diane writes: Many Ringers are familiar with the White Tree Fund and its
ongoing efforts to raise funds for tsunami relief. They have now broadened
the scope of their appeal.

Hall Of Fire This Weekend -- Of Men

This weekend, Hall of Fire returns to discussing the Silmarillion. Chapter
12 -- Of Men -- begins with the Valar withdrawing more and more from
Middle-earth and its inhabitants, both elves and Men. Why is Ulmo -- perhaps
the one least suited to the task -- the only one who seems to care? Does
this seem like a wise move? If the Valar were at all interested in the
Children of Ilúvatar, why do they then turn away and leave them to Morgoth?

Could it be that the Valar themselves are weakening, and less capable of
intervening in Middle Earth except as allies? Or having been burnt in trying
to befriend the Elves, are they simply wary of the greater pitfalls that may
await if they are to meddle with the fate of the more mysterious Second
Children?

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
