Biography: Farmer Maggot was a hobbit with a large family who made a living off his farm in Bamfurlong. Well known for the mushrooms he grew, Maggot happened upon a young Frodo Baggins on many occasions during the hobbits youth, when he would attempt to steal the precious vegetables from Maggot's farm. Many years later, Maggot would once again hear the name Baggins when Frodo and his companions would pass through the farm on their way to the Brandybuck Ferry. Despite the visit of a Black Rider beforehand, Maggot chose to help the four Hobbits on their journey and not to betray them to the Enemy; Maggot's help was instrumental in insuring their safe passage to the Ferry. Maggot also gave Tom Bombadil a great amount of information on each one of the four hobbits that were making the journey from The Shire to Rivendell.

Of Maggot's fate during the War of the Ring no tale is told, however it is likely that he avoided the troubles in the Shire during that time and the resulting Scourinog of the Shire upon Frodo's return.

"It’s a long time since I saw you round here. It’s lucky for you that I know you. I was just going out to set my dogs on any strangers. There are some funny things going on today. Of course, we do get queer folk wandering in these parts at times. Too near the River,"
"You should never have gone mixing yourself up with Hobbiton folk, Mr. Frodo. Folk are queer up there. But you were always a reckless lad. When I heard you had left the Brandybucks and gone off to that old Mr. Bilbo, I said that you were going to find trouble. Mark my words, this all comes of those strange doings of Mr. Bilbo’s."
"Ah yes, I recognized the name. I recollect the time when young Frodo Baggins was one of the worst young rascals of Buckland. But it wasn’t mushrooms I was thinking of. I had just heard the name Baggins before you turned up. What do you think that funny customer asked me?"
