Biography: Known simply as Barliman to many, Barliman Butterbur is the owner and innkeeper of The Prancing Pony, situated in the center of Bree. A cheerful man eager to serve, the main character flaw by which Barliman was all too often afflicted was his terrible memory: something the hobbits realised to their detriment during their stay in Bree. At the peak of the War of the Ring, Barliman was fortunate enough to be 'on the edge of very great troubles', and avoided any direct contact with the servants of The Enemy. On their return to the Shire from their perilous mission to destroy the Ring, Frodo and his companions paid one final visit to Barliman, who was pleasantly suprised to hear that one of the proprietors of his inn had become the King of Gondor.
