NEW LINE ACQUIRES THEONERING.NET
Xoanon @ 1:11 pm EST

FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE

NEW LINE CINEMA ACQUIRES MAJOR LORD OF THE RINGS FANSITE

New Line Cinema, has purchased the rights and ownership duties to the US/Canada/New Zealand based website THEONERING.NET effective immediately.

THEONERING.NET and New Line were in talks for the past 2 months negotiating the details of the purchase which include the following:

THEONERING.NET domain name will now change to LOTRMOVIE-THEONERING.NET, the entire website will be re-designed to incorporate aspects from the offcial LORD OF THE RINGS website and the New Line Store, which sells merchandise from LORD OF THE RINGS as well as other New Line films. As a direct result of the takeover, the official PETER JACKSON faclub will change names from 'THE BASTARDS HAVE LANDED' to 'THE OFFICIAL NEW LINE CINEMA PETER JACKSON FANCLUB'.

Effective immediately, webmasters and staff members on THEONERING.NET will be incorporated and hired by New Line Cinema. The main focus of the site will now be more of a merchandise vendor for LORD OF THE RINGS related merchandise. THEONERING.NET will also manage and maintain a weekly newsletter which will include interesting items eager LORD OF THE RINGS fans can purchase using secure online transactions.

THEONERING.NET was originally forged by the combined vision of the four founding members in May of 1999. During the preceding month, an interest in Tolkiens work and the Lord of the Rings movies conspired to bring Calisuri, Xoanon, Tehanu, and Corvar together to create TORn. The diverse backgrounds and locations of the founding members contributes heavily in what TORn has become.

Founded in 1967, New Line Cinema is the entertainment industry's leading independent producer and distributor of theatrical motion pictures. New Line licenses its films to ancillary markets including cable and broadcast television as well as to international venues. The company, which is a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner Inc., operates several divisions including in-house theatrical distribution, marketing, home video, television, acquisitions, production, licensing and merchandising units.

BREEMOOT Press Release
Xoanon @ 10:25 am EST

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TOLKIEN SCHOLARS AND HOBBIT FANS CONVERGE

Tolkien scholars and hobbit fans will gather at two conferences at The University of St. Thomas over April [26-28], 2001. Concerning Hobbits and Other Matters: Tolkien Across the Disciplines, on Thursday, April [26], will feature a number of formal presentations by scholars from around the country, under sponsorship of the St. Thomas English Department.

Bree Moot 5, over the next two days, will celebrate the works and worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien in more reader-oriented activities, including both individual and group presentations and informal interactions.

The Bree Moot theme is "The Fellowship of Tolkien," broadly interpreted to include approaches to fantasy literature inspired or modeled by Tolkien in his fabulously popular fantasy works, including The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings (now being filmed for a major film release next December by New Line Cinema) and in his scholarly works and teaching. The local Rivendell Group of The Mythopoeic Society is devoted to the example of Tolkien's discussion group in the 30s and 40s, The Inklings (which also included noted writer/scholar/professor C.S. Lewis), which met regularly to discuss books and the great literary tradition as well as to workshop the members' own works-in-progress.

Margaret Howes, Bree Moot guest of honor exemplifies this approach: She published a "fan" article in the mid-60s Tolkien Journal, at the height of the Tolkien campus craze, and went on to derive inspiration from Tolkien in writing (and later performing) her "Tales Told by the Lonely Mountain," some of which were published in The Tolkien Scrapbook. After helping found and participating in the Rivendell discussion group for many years, she last year published her first novel, The Wrong World, and this year is publishing Autumn World, a novel jointly written by five current and former members of the Rivendell Group.

Other program features at Bree Moot will include author/critic Ruth Berman presenting slides on dragon illustration, presentations by Canadian scholar William Sarjeant (and fantasy author "Antony Swithin") on "The Shire: iIts bounds, food and farming," and "Geology of Middle-earth," musician David Emerson on the Tolkien-Donald Swann collaboration, "The Road Goes Ever On" song cycle, and presentations on the Children's Theatre Company dramatizations of The Hobbit and on the forthcoming New Line Cinema films, with members of TheOneRing.net web-site. Other activities include panel discussions, filk-singing, and some displays of fan publications and memorabilia. This is the second time that Bree Moot has come to Minnesota.

Cost for this two day reader-oriented conference is $20 advance through April 15, more at the door.

(Membership in the Concerning Hobbits conference is a separate $30 charge, at the door).

THE TOLKIEN SEMINAR Leading up to Minicon and Bree Moot 5/Concerning Hobbits will be a series of programs held around the Twin Cities approaching our themes on a smaller scale. The first of these will be on April 7, at the Southdale Public Library, at 1:30 p.m. This will be a panel discussion featuring experts on and writers of children's fantasy, FROM HOBBITS TO HARRY POTTER: Children's Fantasy since Tolkien

For more information about Conference plans, contact (612)292-8887, 293 Selby Ave., St. Paul, MN 55102-1811 or d-lena@umn.edu. The Rivendell Group, which is sponsoring the conference, is a chartered discussion group of The Mythopoeic Society and has also been a recognized student organization at the University for the past two decades, studying and discussing fantasy in the Tolkien tradition each month.

PJ's 'Silver' is Movie of the Day
Xoanon @ 10:13 am EST

The Peter Jackson mockumentry 'Forgotten Silver' has been chosen as the movie of the day over at imdb.com.

IMDb Movie of the Day

Peter Jackson (who's helming this winter's The Fellowship of the Ring) has made sublime films (Heavenly Creatures) and silly ones (The Frighteners).

In the sublime category for Mr. Jackson is Forgotten Silver, an inventive, entertaining short film (54 minutes) about legendary New Zealand director, Colin McKenzie. That name doesn't appear in the IMDb database because Colin McKenzie is a fiction, a creation of Jackson, and writer/director Costa Botes, and the film is a wry faux-documentary presented as film history. Jackson himself appears in Silver, claiming to have happened upon the cache of McKenzie footage by accident.

McKenzie is discovered to have been an amazing film innovator: he shoots the first tracking shot, the first close-up, the first color test, and synchronizes the first sound to his footage. Eventually, his magnum opus is his biblical epic, "Salome;" the film both ruins him and sets him off as a director to rival D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille. Cameos by Harvey Weinstein, Leonard Maltin , and Sam Neill all help to perpetrate this fraud, all in the service of this splendid, creative movie. [More]

Noro lim, noro lim, Arwen!?!
Jincey @ 2:11 am EST

Well, well, well! Remember all the talk about poor ol' Glorfindel being ousted from FotR because more room was needed for Arwen? A source close to the production says this is not entirely true! It seems Glorfindel will indeed be at the Ford of Bruinen, in a role slightly modified from the text. We have heard that Glorfindel gives Arwen his horse, Asfaloth, and bids her to hurry on across with Frodo. He then remains with Aragorn to harry the Ringwraiths into the waters. But wait! There's more! Rumor has it that Glorfindel is actually at the Council of Elrond, as we read in the book.

So! Glorfindel's in? Where does Arwen come from? Is there any chance Bombadil will make a cameo, after all? Mr. Jackson, if you could, please drop us an email and help set these rumors straight! ; )

And the Oscar Goes To....
Xoanon @ 11:40 am EST

Ok, so I have Oscar on my mind. While watching the show last night I was day dreaming about Oscar 2002 and I just had to post up my predictions as to what 'Fellowship of the Rings' will win next year.

Now, despite 'Titanic' and 'Gladiator' this year I've always maintained that the Golden Boy tends to shy away from the huge Hollywood blockbuster films that FOTR will eventually be. That is why I have no 'Best Actor...' nominations, plus the fact that I've seen very little of the acting to date. But what I have seen is costumes, special effects, editing and all the other things I predict here. So, here it is, you can call me on it next year, but the Oscars will go to...

Cinematography: Andrew Lesnie

Film Editing: John Gilber

Costume Design: Ngila Dickson

Sound & Sound Editing: Mike Hopkins, Chris Ward

Adpt. Screenplay: Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, Stephen Sinclair, Frances Walsh
