NZ Post wants YOU!!! Plus more on NZSO's LOTR Score Performance
Tehanu @ 9:41 pm EST

Newline and the New Zealand post are having a stamp launch for the new LotR:Two Towers stamps at 5pm on 2 dec 2002 at Parliament buildings in Wellington. They have graciously invited 20 LotR fans to come to the launch, in costume if they'd like. If you are interested in being on of those 20, please RSVP as soon as possible to stamplaunch@frodosgirl.net to reserve a spot (you will be able to get into the launch only if your name is on the list). [Launches are an attractive source of nice wine and nibbly cheesy things and yummy bits of salmon, in my experience, so if that sounds like fun and you also like the idea of meeting some other LOTR fans, by all means sign up for this! - Tehanu]

Direct from the Hollywood Bowl Wellington enters the ancient world of sorcerers and wizards through the power of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on Thursday 5 December at the Michael Fowler Centre. Acclaimed Hollywood Bowl conductor John Mauceri leads the NZSO in a concert that will include music from the recent hit film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and the Southern Hemisphere premiere of Academy Award®-winning composer Howard Shore's new orchestral suite adapted from his score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. NEW LINE CINEMA'S THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS LIGHTS UP SCREENS AROUND THE WORLD
Xoanon @ 4:48 pm EST

World premieres set for New York, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Seattle,Toronto, Wellington and Sydney in December

Los Angeles, CA, November 19, 2002 - New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the central film in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy based on the J.R.R. Tolkien classic, is set to debut in premiere showings around the world, it was announced today by Rolf Mittweg, New Line Cinema's president and chief operating officer, worldwide distribution and marketing.

The film will make its North American bow in New York on December 5, followed by the European premiere in Paris on December 10 and the UK premiere on December 11 in London. On December 15, the film will premiere in Los Angeles and in Copenhagen, with the Queen of Denmark attending. A special screening in Seattle follows on December 16. The film premieres in New Zealand, where The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot, in Wellington on December 18, and in Sydney, Australia on December 19.

"The opening of this film has truly become a global event," Mittweg said, "because The Lord of the Rings has been embraced by so many different cultures. The first film has shipped 35 million DVD and VHS units worldwide, a testament to the popularity of the trilogy and how widely the fan base has broadened. Multiple premieres of The Two Towers around the globe are a fun and appropriate way to celebrate both the universality of Tolkien's themes and the excitement and anticipation that is building among moviegoers."

New Line Cinema presents The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Peter Jackson's epic adventure scheduled to open December 18, 2002. The trilogy represents an unprecedented undertaking - three films made simultaneously over a year and a half of production. The first film in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, was released December 19, 2001, to widespread critical acclaim and garnered $860 million worldwide. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, more than any other film in 2001, and won four.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers stars (in alphabetical order) Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Brad Dourif, Bernard Hill, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, Miranda Otto, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Karl Urban, David Wenham, and Elijah Wood.

New Line Cinema presents a Wingnut Films Production, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, directed by Peter Jackson. The screenplay, by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Stephen Sinclair and Jackson, is based on the classic trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film is produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne. Also executive producing is Mark Ordesky. The director of photography is Andrew Lesnie, A.C.S. The production designer is Grant Major. Michael Horton is the editor. The co-producers are Rick Porras and Jamie Selkirk.

Jasmine Watson: Jeweller for Lord of the Rings
Xoanon @ 3:59 pm EST

As the jewellery designer for The Lord of the Rings, Jasmine Watson was responsible for the design and creation of the ornate and magical jewellery seen throughout the Academy Award winning film trilogy. Inspired by the beauty and fragility of nature, she brings you the first piece in her 2003 jewellery collection, the ‘Silver Leaf Pendant’ in the style of Art Nouveau.

Focusing on the theme of an unfurled leaf, this intricately crafted sterling silver pendant, priced at US $124.95, is limited to only 2000 pieces worldwide and is stamped with the British Hallmark of quality.

Trying To Catch The Latest TTT Trailers/Teasers?
Xoanon @ 1:44 pm EST

From: Lady Haldir

I am an Assistant Manager of a movie theater, and we got our order to put advance tickets for TTT on sale starting this Friday (Nov 22) (I assume most USA theaters part of major chains that will get the film will do this) I know for sure all Regal Entertainment Group (Regal , Edwards, and United Artists theaters form this company) theaters will be, as this is the chain I work for. This order included showtimes and an exact running time : 179 minutes!

Also to help anyone trying to see the TTT trailer on Harry Potter- it is a teaser, not the official trailer, but a different teaser than the one out before, and it is on the second and fourth prints of Harry Potter (DareDevil is on first and third) meaning theaters who have Harry Potter in only one theater will not have TTT at all. And if they have 3 prints it will only be on one, etc. But there is no way other than asking for non theater employees to know which prints are which, so they would still need to ask, but hopefully this info helps a little.

For anyone still trying to catch the final trailer on the big screen, it is still running on first and third prints (not 2nd) of Red Dragon for those theaters who still have it, also on Ghost Ship (1st prints) for any theaters still playing that. As far as I know, these are the only movies out now that are sure to have it (on the specified prints) , but some theaters may have added it on to various movies as replacements, as other trailers needed to be removed.

Dragonmeet 2002 will be happening at Kensington Town Hall on Saturday 30th November 2002, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

You can find more information on all of this and more, including useful bits like how to get there, at the convention’s website: http://www.dragonmeet.com. And you can also buy tickets online, which will save you money and queueing on the day.

RAVE MOTION PICTURES HICKORY CREEK 16 TO SPONSOR DENTON COUNTY MHMR TOY AND FOOD DRIVE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS PROMOTION

HICKORY CREEK, Texas - RAVE MOTION PICTURES is proud to announce sponsorship of Denton County Mental Health and Mental Retardation's toy and food drive "Holiday Helping Hands." Beginning Dec. 1 a donation of either one new, unwrapped toy or two non-perishable food items can be made at the theater in exchange for a coupon good for one free small popcorn. The donor's name will also be entered in a drawing for various other prizes including a package of 10 free movie passes. Donations will be taken until Dec. 20. Winners will be posted the evening of Dec. 21.

This is all leading up to Hickory Creek 16's "ONE NIGHT TO RULE THEM ALL." This is a one-night extravaganza on Dec. 21 celebrating one of the most anticipated sequels of all time, New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," the second edition to J.R.R. Tolkien's world renowned trilogy and follow-up to 2001's four-time Academy Award winner The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The third installment, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" comes to theaters in December 2003.

"One Night to Rule Them All" festivities will take place between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. The theater staff is preparing right now, constructing 18-feet tall paper mache replicas of the TWO TOWERS to be displayed in the lobby and a 10-foot tall window painting including the film's logo and main characters. For the night, staff members will be dressed as various characters from the movies and as other hobbits and elves. On hand will be a local medieval acting troop performing sword fights exhibitions and a fabulous face painter. Lord of the Rings and Tolkien trivia contests will be held before each "Two Towers" showing during the allotted hours.

Advance tickets will be available at the box office or online at RaveMotionPictures beginning Nov. 22.

For more information or to donate prizes please contact Nikki Daniel at the theater at 940-321-2836, by cell phone 940-390-3137 or by e-mail at ndaniel@ravemotionpictures.com. For more information on Denton County MHMR contact Megan Harris at meganh@dentonmhmr.org. All prize donors will receive in-theater advertisement for the event.

The Legacy of the Lord of the Rings
Tehanu @ 11:48 pm EST

The Legacy of _The Lord of the Rings_ has been essentially completed for broadcast. Canada's premiere arts channel, Bravo!, has offered to broadcast the documentary. The date hasn't been finalized, but the possibilities are either just before or after the release of New Line Cinema's "The Two Towers".

Among the most interesting features are interview footage of J.R.R. Tolkien, the artwork of Ted Nasmith, and many interviews with Tolkien experts and writers, such as Tom Shippey, Verlyn Flieger, Peter Beagle, and Philippa Boyens (writer of the New Line Cinema films).

JRD Is Recovering Well After The Operation
Xoanon @ 11:59 am EST

John Rhys Davies, after a multi-hour operation, performed on friday night by dr Ivan Kirin, has been placed at the Trauma ward of the Rijeka General Hospital and, according to dr Stipe Bezevan, is feeling well.

The actor, famous for his parts in the movies "Victor, Victoria", "Raiders of the lost Ark" and his latest role of the dwarf Gimli in the cult movie "The Lord of the Rings", as well as the TV series "War and memories" and "Shogun", will be one of the most famous patients of the Rijeka Hospital for the next 8 to 10 days, dr. Kirin told us. In addition to a severe arm fracture, he has a large cut on his head, which caused substantial bleeding, but, fortunately, his scull is not fractured. We found out from very reliable sources that J. R. Davies is pleased with his treatment by the doctors and the medical staff, although, doubting the capabilities of our medical experts, immediately after the accident he demanded to be transfered for operation into one of the American hospitals.

While one of the musketeers is forced to rest at the Rijeka Hospital, the filming of "La Femme Musketeer" has been continued on location in Pazin, we have been confirmed in a phonecall by one of the leading members of the Croatian part of the crew, Hrvoje Matasovic. The set knocked over by strong wind which caused injury to J. R. Davies has been repaired, and until the injured musketeer is feeling better, they will be filming scenes which don't require his presence. ..."

Christopher Lee Correction Plus!
Xoanon @ 4:29 pm EST

Dave and Tracey write:

We've just been over to the Christopher Lee Web website to check out further details on his signings in Nottingham in the UK. The official site says he is there 14.00-17.00. Not from 13.00, as stated in your snippet, nor is he signing any personal items in addition to purchases on the day.

The web address is www.christopherleeweb.com which you can check further if you wish. We'll be going to meet him all the same, been huge fans most of our lives-and we have friends in Nottingham to stay with! Will mail any snippets in we may have for TORN in due course. On that note, a friend of ours met with Brian Sibley and Jude Fisher on the 12th of this month in Cambridge here in the UK. (Got us two books personally messaged and signed).

They had some nice tidbits/stories to share with him, not the least of which was a wee tale regarding Laurence Makoare in full-body Lurtz make up, being led about the sets because he couldn't see due to his heavy make up and contact lenses limiting his mobility and the fact the that the poor man had to stay in make up for ten hours plus at a time, because it took to long to take all his prosthetics, etc off and on between takes. Imagine, sitting next to Lurtz at lunch! Will get hold of more tales from our friend Dave, when we next have the opportunity.

Andrew Lesnie Talks TTT, PJ and More!
Xoanon @ 4:17 pm EST

Frank writes: Not sure if this is has already been reported or not by other sources but I though it was interesting. A member of the Home Theater Forum, which is one of the most respected HT discussion boards on the net, recently posted the following message on the FotR EE DVD thread. Now this may be unconfirmed as it is coming from a 3rd party, but the members of this forum are very trustworthy.

Vickie should know that a friend of mine met Andrew Lesnie at a special cinematographer's seminar here in Melbourne a couple of months ago and spoke to him for about 15 minutes. He said Lesnie was very nice, open and friendly and happy to chat about anything - my friend also said you could tell Lesnie was buzzed about the movie and his involvement with it. (The seminar had just rescreened the 'Mines of Moria' sequence and Lesnie looked proud as punch - what a scene to put on your resume...). Some comments Lesnie made to my friend, some of which may have appeared elsewhere on the web...

THE TWO TOWERS is much, much bigger in scale than FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. Lesnie really had a 'wait till you see it!' vibe about it.

THE TWO TOWERS will look a lot better in theaters than FELLOWSHIP did. The entire Super-35 to digital grading to final print process entailed some generation loss with the final theatrical print of FELLOWSHIP, giving the film a slightly grainy look that many HTF folk would probably recognise from other Super-35 theatrical releases. Lesnie said they were now using a new procedure for the release of THE TWO TOWERS that enabled them to make a direct transfer to the final print (?) at a particular stage of post, rather than utilising an intermediate transfer as they did with FELLOWSHIP. Essentially, THE TWO TOWERS will appear a generation or more sharper than FELLOWSHIP did in theaters, giving it a cleaner look and one that more accurately represents what they originally shot. Lesnie seemed confident that they had the problem 'licked' and that you'll notice the difference when THE TWO TOWERS finally comes out.

Lesnie's first meeting with Jackson was a funny one. Jackson asked Lesnie if he'd seen any of his previous movies, and Lesnie mentioned that he'd seen BRAINDEAD (known as DEAD/ALIVE in the States). Jackson asked Lesnie what he thought of it, and Lesnie (who doesn't like films that are too gory) was somewhat embarassed to admit that he thought it was disgusting and that he wasn't able to get through it. Jackson didn't mind and was happy that Lesnie was honest about it. Lesnie also seemed pleased that they'd developed such a good working relationship since.

Finally, my friend asked Lesnie a little about the circumstances following Lesnie's 'sacking' from the shoot of John Woo's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 in Sydney, a professional set-back that luckily allowed Lesnie to work on Jackson's trilogy. (Lesnie shot BABE here in Australia and was hired for Woo's movie with a lot of publicity - he was later taken off the project amid lots of rumours and speculation as to the reason why). My friend asked if Lesnie had ever seen the final movie, given the evident 'bad blood' at the time (which Lesnie dismissed a little, saying that his removal from the project was one of those things and Cruise and Woo were both good guys). Jackson apparently flew an early print of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 over to the NZ site and he and Lesnie had a bit of a giggle watching it in a private theater whilst in the middle of their own shoot.

Misconceived Error With FOTR:EE DVD
Strider @ 2:00 pm EST

Many of you have written in to us describing a problem you have had with your Extended Edition of FOTR, where the disc appears to stall between Boromir's conversation with Aragorn and the Mirror of Galadriel. Well, TORn staffer Pippin Took points out that this is not in fact an issue with the DVD itself but with the DVD player;

'It's called a layer change, when the DVD player's laser switches from one layer of information on the disc to the second layer. This is normal, and the only way around it is to buy one of the higher-end DVD players, which are better equipped to handle the layer changes more smoothly and with less of a pause while the laser switches over.'

John Rhys Davies Injury Article
Arathorn @ 1:16 pm EST

TORn Staffer Mia sends in a translation of the article posted in the Croatian newspaper Vecernji List yesterday concerning John Rhys-Davies' very unfortunate accident on the set of "Musketeers". We've deliberated about posting this, given the somewhat distasteful manner in which JRD's privacy appears to have been violated by the press - but in the interests of keeping his concerned fans as best informed as possible, here's the translation:

ACTOR BADLY HURT AT THE SET OF "LA FEMME MUSKETEER"
John Rhys-Davies in the central Rijeka hospital - background props collapsed on one of the musketeers.

John Rhys-Davies, who plays one of the musketeers (Porthos, btw - M.) in the film "La Femme Musketeer" was badly hurt yesterday afternoon during the filming in Pazin. The heavy construction of a background prop had collapsed and hit the actor, who was immediately transferred to the ER section of the Rijeka main hospital. The group of doctors led by Ivan Kirin, MD, stated there was a major head injury with severe bleeding, and a fracture of the right arm. The actor also had chest injuries but no fractures. John Rhys-Davies, known for his role as the Dwarf in the film "The Lord of the Rings", will have to stay in the hospital for the next week, which will probably result in stopping the filming of "La Femme Musketeer". The film crew met last night at the Lovran Excelsior to discuss further filming plans. The American and Croatian actors involved with the film have had a chain of bad luck; last week the actress Nastassya Kinski slipped and hurt her knee, but the injury was not a serious one.

Ananova are also running this story.

We at TORn wish John the very best and a speedy recovery.

On November 6th, Decipher released on sale the complete The Two Towers Trading Card Game. TheOneRing.net hopes to have all 365 cards as soon as possible! In the meantime, here's a taste of what's in store from these incredibly revealing pictures:

(from L to R): The Forbidden Pool, a herd of Oliphaunts, Men of Rhûn, the Black Gate, some more Oliphaunts, a group of Southron warriors, some faces in the Dead Marshes, the fallen bodies of the Uruk-hai, the Caves under Helm's Deep and Saruman overlooking his Orcs.

No More Sex In TTT!
Xoanon @ 9:18 am EST

Not that there ever was any in the first place...check this out from Fergus: I recieved this update from Odeon concerning TTT - it seems the sexual content was a mistake! The fil has been confirmed as a 12A which means there may be more violence than FOTR.

1) The actual release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is December 18th and NOT December 13th as reported.

2) The certificate for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is confirmed as 12A. However, the correct certificate addendum is in fact, "contains intense combat and fantasy horror scenes". It is NOT, "contains moderate action, violence and one sex scene" which was attached by mistake. This is in fact the correct certificate addendum for James Bond: Die Another Day.

UK Rates TTT For Sexual Content?
Xoanon @ 2:09 pm EST

Fergus writes: Just thought you might like to know that odeon in the UK are listing TTT as a 12A (which is a new cert) and higher than lst years PG rating for FOTR.

And Doddy sends this in:

I just recieved an e-mail from Odeon cinema UK, with this info on TTT;

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers (12A*)
Released 13th December
Eagerly awaited sequel to last year's blockbuster The Fellowship of the Ring.
*Contains moderate action, violence and one sex scene.

Any number of queries with that - is 13th a typo? And what sex scene? Although this is the first confirmation I've seen of a certification, and it's using the new (in the UK) 12 advisory rating.

Region 2 Easter Egg Mystery
Demosthenes @ 6:48 am EST

I've received dozens of reports from people throughout Europe about the R2 Easter Egg mystery.

Summarising quickly:

Everyone seems to have been able to play the second Easter Egg fine. However, a number have had issues with the MTV clip. These people all seem to live in the UK and Ireland.

Nevertheless, a (not insignificant) number have not had trouble with it. This includes people in Sweden, Finland, Germany, Norway, France and the Netherlands. No-one in the UK or Ireland has been able to play the MTV clip so far.

Conclusions:

It could be that the MTV was the bit that fell victim to the axe of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classifications). Although, Mad_Iguana points out that BBFC has no jurisdiction in Ireland, so what's going on still remains somewhat of a mystery. We shall continue to investigate.

Thank you to the dozens of people who wrote in and helped contribute to this report.

Update: I followed this up with the BBFC. They wrote back saying that they had never passed the MTV Spoof and that it was not included on the UK R2 release.

The full reply is below. This discusses the MTV Spoof fairly explicitly. If you are easily offended, you may wish to read no further.

"Thank you for your e.mail.

Two DVD extras for THE LORD OF THE RINGS caused the BBFC difficulties. The first was a 'behind the scenes' documentary in which bad language and offensive hand gestures were used by members of the cast. These would have been unacceptable at the 'PG' level so the bad language was dubbed out and the hand gestures removed, allowing the documentary to receive a 'PG'. These cuts are reflected in the website record you mention (1 minute 16 seconds cut).

The second extra that caused us problems was the MTV spoof you refer to. Unlike the above documentary, however, the entire sequence was a problem at 'PG' and could not be saved by cutting.

The sequence in question showed a spoof of the Council of Elrond at which one of the characters announces that, after a drunken session in a piercing parlour, the Ring has been attached to his penis! We gave the distributors the option of removing this sequence entirely so that the disc could retain its 'PG' or, alternatively, accept a '12' certificate - in which case the whole box set would have to become a '12'. The distributors decided they did not want to raise the box set to a '12' so they did not proceed any further with this particular sequence. This is why there is no formal record for the MTV sequence on our website - the work was simply never passed by us in any version.

We hope this clarifies the situation."

Hall of Fire Chats For November
Demosthenes @ 3:25 am EST

Been wondering what's on the cards for Hall of Fire for the rest of November? Here's the schedule for you ...

November 16&17
Everything about the Palantiri

What are these "stones of seeing"? How do they work? What's the difference between a minor and a major stone. How vital were they during the War of the Ring and could they have saved Arthedain/Arnor from destruction?

And how is it that Denethor uses one and (eventually) goes nuts while Saruman goes to "the dark side"? What is the influence of the attitude of the user in the success in one's will or integrity? (And much much more ... remember there's a whole chapter of reading in Unfinished Tales on these things!)

November 23&24
The Two Towers - Book 4, Ch 9: Shelob's Lair

"Presently they were under the shadow, and there in the midst of it they saw the opening of a cave. `This is the way in,' said Gollum softly. `This is the entrance to the tunnel.' He did not speak its name: Torech Ungol, Shelob's Lair ...."

Nov 30 & Dec 1
Gender imbalance in LoTR

Is there a gender imbalance in LoTR? A simple head count supports this, but what of the relative strengths of the characters in this?

What is the effect of gender imbalance on LoTR? Does it reduce the tale to a giant "boys own adventure"? If so, is this a bad thing? And how does this affect/diminish one's reading of the book. (Could be some interesting personal experiences here)

Look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming chats.

The Spikey Wheel Is Baaaaaaaaaaack!
Xoanon @ 4:21 pm EST

Dennis sends this along

I know that there has been a lot of back and forth talk about the "Death of Saruman" on the spiked wheel thing, but as I was sifting through the 4th disc looking at the stills from the Orthanc miniature, two pictures of a EXACT replica in miniature of the spiked wheel in the picture that shows a white robed figure with a beard impaled on one of the spikes!

Xoanon here, I've gone through our archives to provide you with a little background on this story. Years ago when the films were being made a NZ newspaper crew captured this fascinating picture of what appears to be a white wizard with a LONG beard impaled by a spikey water wheel of some sort.

Click here for the picture and article in question.

TheOneRing.net was also given highly sensetive call sheets (day to day information on what, who, where, when, and how many things were being filmed on any given day) from the same day.

Click here for a scan of the exact shot being refrenced

It mentions Saruman bring impailed by the wheel and dropping the palantir into some water.

Extended Edition Easter Eggs
Demosthenes @ 1:29 pm EST

We reported this a couple weeks ago, but with the Extended Edition now in general release, it's worth reviewing the easter eggs that are floating around on your new DVD!

Update:Okay, I'm receive reports that these are not on the R2 DVDs. Is this solely a R1 phenomenon? That'd be a shame for non-R1 people (like me!). If you happen to have a non R1 DVD and can pull up these easter eggs, drop me a line!

If having two discs filled with amazing special features wasn't enough, the four-disc Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring features two very cool Easter Eggs that just add to the awesomeness of the set.

These first two eggs are found on discs one and two of the set, and each one is of a video that many LOTR fans would be quite happy to have on DVD.

The first one is actually the MTV Movie Awards spoof on the Council of Elrond scene that is pretty hilarious. I've wanted to see this again since it first aired (and was repeated a thousand times on MTV), and now it's on DVD.

To find this one, go into the Scene Selection menu on disc one, and head to the final page where you'll find the real Council of Elrond scene. High light that scene and press "down" to find an image of the Ring. Press enter to view the entire clip from MTV complete with an introduction from Peter Jackson.

(NB: This Easter Egg is not necessarily kiddie-safe. Parents might want to watch this bit themselves before they unleash their children on it.)

The second egg can be found on disc two, and is the awesome four-minute "Fan Preview" of The Two Towers that was shown at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring this past March as it was on the way out of the theaters.

To watch this awesome trailer, go to the Scene Selection menu and navigate your way to the final page where you'll find the chapter with the Fan Club Credits. Move the cursor to the numbers on the far right of the screen, and when it's on "48" press down to make an image of the Two Towers appear. Press enter to view the trailer in full anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

Thanks to Bernie and TORn staffer Scorpio for this information.

SHOP: The Three Wizards
Calisuri @ 10:46 am EST

Limited-Edition Framed Photograph of Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and Peter Jackson from The Lord of the RingsFor about a week now, I have been fighting with a nasty case of the flu, confined to bed, and barely getting to check the latest news on TORn. Last Friday, I opened my frontdoor to discover a 'get well' package. Lo and Behold, someone had sent me the newest collectible from LOTRshop.com: 'The Three Wizards.' Yeah, you know, the 'Three Wizards' prize from a few contests ago has finally shown itself, and I must say, it is AMAZING.

So what is it?

It is a limited edition framed photograph of Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Saruman (Christopher Lee), and Peter Jackson as they are preparing for a scene outside of Orthanc.

Now this isn't any normal cheap computer print-out. This is an actual photograph captured by Pierre Vinet, one of the still photographers on set during the filming of The Lord of the Rings. The frame is equally as valuable. The photo is perfectly mounted in a black wood frame with off-white matte and covered by UV-filtering plexiglass.

The true test of the quality of this product was how my SOTORN would react to it. (SOTORN? Yeah, you know, Significant Others of Tolkien Obsessed Reactive Ninnies) Well, she loves it. So much so, she said, "I would rather have this in our living room than The Two Towers poster!" She is also a photographer by trade, so that gives you a good idea of the quality of this piece in the eyes of someone who knows about such things.

Here is the description from the LOTRshop.com which includes dimensions and other important info:

A stunning juxtaposition of Middle-earth and twenty-first century filmmaking, it shows Gandalf, Saruman, and Peter Jackson during production of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Still photographer Pierre Vinet captured this defining moment on location in New Zealand as Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Christopher Lee (Saruman) and writer/director Peter Jackson prepared to shoot another scene. Each wizard is dressed in his powerful garb -- Gandalf and Saruman wear their flowing robes, while Jackson strolls beside them in his trademark shorts -- and each holds his magic-making device -- Gandalf and Saruman carry their staffs, while Jackson holds his notes for the day's shooting. The photograph is a full 12 by 18 inches, is professionally matted and framed in an 18 1/2 by 23 1/2 inch black wood frame, and is protected by UV-filtering Plexiglass. A holographic New Line Cinema sticker is affixed to the rear of the frame to certify the photograph's authenticity. Perfect for display in your home or office, this exclusive item is available in strictly limited quantities. Don`t miss the opportunity to own this amazing photograph which shows these three masters as they bring The Lord of the Rings to life!

If you are looking for that perfect gift for someone this season, this is something that will brighten any Holiday.

Tolkien Artist Ted Nasmith Announces Launch of New Web Site
Xoanon @ 12:31 am EST

TORONTO - November 12, 2002. Ted Nasmith, world renowned for his richly detailed realistic paintings depicting the fantasy worlds of J. R. R. Tolkien, announced today the opening of his new internet web site at www.tednasmith.com

The new motion pictures by Peter Jackson based on The Lord of the Rings have created an unprecedented interest in the mythical realms of J. R. R. Tolkien. Long before the films, Ted Nasmith was bringing the extremely visual worlds of Tolkien to life in paintings, with finely detailed work depicting the rich landscape and unique characters of Middle-earth. "The fans are very interested in the idea of faithful interpretations, but at the same time there's a wide tolerance for a diverse range of styles and interpretations," says Nasmith.

Early in his career, Nasmith sent copies of some of his Lord of the Rings-inspired paintings to Tolkien himself and was greatly encouraged by the author's positive response and constructive suggestions. First published in the yearly Tolkien Calendar of 1987, Nasmith's work has now been featured in more Tolkien Calendars than any other artist.

"Discovering Tolkien had a very profound effect on me, and helped lead to much that I now count most dear. It opened up in me a dormant love of lost and misty times, myth and legend," Nasmith says. "Not since childhood had I felt such a sense of 'home' -- the excitement of depicting Middle-earth never seems to diminish."

He is currently hard at work on the paintings for his third Tolkien Calendar in a row, featuring artwork inspired by The Return of the King, for 2004. "I have set out to create a combination of major and minor scenes that will complement my earlier artwork as well as enter new places not well trodden," says Nasmith. Visitors can now find a special sneak-peak of this and other projects on Nasmith's new official web site.

In the mid-nineties, Nasmith was asked by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins to create a special series of paintings for a new edition of The Silmarillion. Artwork based on this period of Middle-earth's history is rare, and Nasmith's work -- in a signature style that echoes the Luminist landscape and Victorian neo-Classical schools of art -- has greatly helped bring this important book to life for legions of Tolkien fans.

Although illustrating Tolkien's extensive works is Nasmith's primary love, visitors to his web site will also find samples of his automotive paintings and architectural renderings, and gain a new appreciation for the wonderful work of this important contemporary Canadian artist.

More than a hundred and fifty paintings, as well as information about ordering prints and other publications, can be found on Ted Nasmith's web site at: www.tednasmith.com

I found this great interview with our friend Philippa Boyens in the latest issue of Creative Screenwriting magazine. (Bill Condon is on the cover. BTW - Bill Condon is the talented writer/director who made the film "Gods and Monsters" starring Sir Ian McKellen.)

In the interview Phil discusses the collaborative effort she shared in writing "The Lord of the Rings." The article focuses on "The Two Towers," but includes information about FOTR and "The Return of the King."

If you haven't read the book yet, there are some serious spoilers in the article. Philippa explores the differences between the book and the films, and comments on her approaches to character development. She even discusses "The Empire Strikes Back."

After Christopher Lee (Saruman) has come out and specifically denied rumors that he is to play Dumbledore in any future Harry Potter films, all fingers started pointing at another LOTR star, Sir Ian McKellen. If you want confirmation on something, go to the source, so we did just that.

In a recent phone interview with McKellen (while staying in Vancouver to finish up X2), I asked him point blank about playing Dumbledore, and he expressly denied being asked about the part, being approched or even considered for it.

On the contrary he's planning on staying in Vancouver for a while and work with some local talent, then off to England.

Watch this space for the entire interview with Ian McKellen (Gandalf) next week!

Dunland Wildman Cameo Action Figure?
Demosthenes @ 4:59 am EST

Okay, maybe I'm going crazy, but I'm not the only one to see a resemblance to the Great One in this Toybiz action figure here.

You do think I'm crazy? Thought so. Check out this photo, then. You want to look at the the third wildman to the left of Saruman's staff. Look familiar?

(Incidentally, you might have spotted the guy in a t-shirt on a platform in the background in that photo. Random crewmember of the month, perhaps?)

Next, check out this Elfenomo.com image.

Finally, here's Peter Jackson without his firebrands and war paint, courtesy of TBHL.

Now go back and put a pair of glasses on that Wildman. ;)

Thanks to Ringer Fan Eikitchi for writing in about the action figure!

Earlier today we posted this article asking for help in supporting our Youth Gaming League, since then donations and supportive e-mails have been flooding our boxes! One such e-mail comes from a Teacher in Illinois who uses the LOTR Miniature War Game to introduce his students to the world of Tolkien!

Dear Havens,

I am very pleased to see that you're interested in how Tolkien gaming is important to the future of his literary works. I run a very large league of gamers in Illinois that play the LOTR Strategy Battle Game from Games Workshop. Many of the younger kids seemed bored with the other traditional games and were looking for something new. What they found, was something very special.

When I first introduced the LOTR game, many kids were skeptical. It was a new skirmish game set in a world they did not know. However, once they saw the ease in which the game was played, they were drawn in. What happened next was something quite refreshing. Here were kids telling me that they had found lots of "great scenarios" after READING the books. The kids were telling ME about the battles and the great adventures. Furthermore, I was fielding thousands of questions about this, that, and the other thing. Here were pre-teen to teenage kids finding a new world in which to set their minds free. They were no longer discussing the trivial mindless nonsense of the pop culture but having debates on what the Fellowship should've done, or what actions might have been taken. My personal favorite came from a nine year old who asked why Gandalf and Frodo didn't fly to Mount Doom with Gwaihir and just throw the ring in and leave. LOL.

I was so proud of what I had accomplished! Here were a dozen young minds taken from the claws of the pop culture and placed in a refreshing world of literary genius. They were having intelligent discussions and then playing out their "what-if" scenarios on the gaming table. Furthermore, I even had parents telling me how happy they were that their KIDS WERE READING!!! I believe that no matter what, I have made our world a better place for bringing young minds into Tolkien's world.
